The Wuhan Metro is an elevated and underground metro system in the city of Wuhan, Hubei, China. The system opened on 28 July 2004,[2] making Wuhan the fifth city in mainland China to have a metro system after Beijing, Tianjin, Shanghai, Guangzhou.[3] This is the first Metro system in China referred to as a light rail (轻轨, qing gui) system in Chinese terminology.
As of 2011, only the first line, located entirely within the Hankou part of the city, is in operation. Several more lines, which will eventually connect Hanyang and Wuchang as well, are under construction.

Phase 1 stations are (from west to east): Zongguan, Taipingyang, Qiaokoulu, Chongrenlu, Lijibeilu, Youyilu, Xunlimen (originally Jianghanlu, connection with future Line 2; not to confuse with the future Jianghanlu station of Line 2), Dazhilu, Sanyanglu, Huangpulu.

Line 4, will also be mostly underground. It will run in a east-west route serving the Hanyang and Wuchang areas. The first phase linking Wuchang and Wuhan railway stations is expected to be finished by 2012; this will result in all three main railway stations of Wuhan being connected by the Metro. The second phase across the Yangtze River to Hanyang by 2015.
Line 3, Line 5, Line 6, Line 7, and Line 8 are currently being planned as the near-future extension according to a master plan approved by the Chinese National Development and Reform Commission.[6] The following maps illustrated the lines approved by this plan (please refer to the map for 2017 for all approved lines).
